Twaambo Mutinta Itezhi Tezhi Member of Parliament said teachers need to be trained on how to keep children safe in school.

Acccording to statement on ZNBC, Mr Mutinta who is also Parliament Committee Chairperson for Education Science and Technology has called on the Ministry of Education and other child rights organisations to champion for mandatory child safeguarding and protection policies to be part of requirements in schools standards in order to protect children against any harm.

He said this in a statement issued in Lusaka.

Mr Mutinta a child rights activist disclosed that Zambia  ranks poorly in juvenile justice and child protection systems in Africa.

He said this explains why the country has continued to lose lives of children through school based accidents and other forms of child abuse.

He also called on Teacher training institutions to ensure that their curriculum now incorporates child safeguarding and child protection courses which should be before getting a teaching licences.

Mr Mutinta’s was reacting to news of two children who died in separate school accidents last week and another four drowned in Mazabuka.
