Zambia has recorded over 500 cases of defilement between May and August 2022 with the highest number of victims being girls.

According to Police Spokes person Rae Hamoonga, only two cases involved boys while the 524 cases involve girls bringing the total to 526.

This is a drop from 576 recorded in the second quarter of last year.

He says the previous quarter had 5 cases involving boys and 571 were girls.

Mr. Hamoonga notes that Lusaka recorded the highest cases at 148 followed by Eastern Province with 86 and Central Province with 63 cases.

“Most of the defilement cases involve perpetrators who are related to the victims”, Mr Hamoonga said.

He has since called on parents and guardians not to take chances whenever they leave the children in the care of relatives.
