The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has said that it will not accept nominations from any candidate who caused a vacancy in the National Assembly.

The Commission said this ahead of tomorrow’s nominations.

“The Electoral Commission of Zambia wishes to state its position on the eligibility of candidates whose elections were nullified by the Constitutional Court and thereby causing vacancies in the National Assembly. This position applies to nominations scheduled to be conducted tomorrow Thursday the 25th August, 2022,” read a statement issued by ACC Corporate Affairs Manager Patricia Luhanga.

“The Commission in line with Article 72 (4) of the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act No. 2 of 2016 will therefore, not accept nominations from any candidate who caused a vacancy in the National Assembly.”

Luhanga said Electoral stakeholders should take note that the mentioned position relates to National Assembly elections and not Local Government elections.

“The Commission further wishes to urge stakeholders to acquaint themselves with the two recent judgments and the Constitutional Provisions on eligibility of candidates who cause a nullification or a vacancy in the National Assembly,” he said.
