Government has acted to rein in rising prices of mealie-meal by suspending the sale of maize from Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to traders while keeping the supply to only millers in order to keep costs of a K25 kilogramme bag of the staple at no more than K150.

Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo has warned that any miller found arbitrarily increasing mealie meal prices will compel Government to restrain supply of grain to them.

However, despite these measures, the private sector still remains free to export maize and its products sourced from elsewhere other than FRA.Mr Mtolo said the country has sufficient maize stock to reach the next harvest. This is contained in a report published by Zambia Daily Mail.
