Speaking during a press briefing shortly after the Agency met the miller’s in Lusaka, Mr HAMBWEZYA said both parties have agreed to ensure that mealie meal is sold at affordable prices.

Mr HAMBWEZYA said the agency understands the factors at play but has since thanked the millers for their cooperation in reducing mealie meal prices .

He said despite the reduction being minimal , he is hopeful that with more interactions the price will continue reducing .

Mr HAMBWEZYA has since called on shops and retailers to also reduce the price of mealie meal so that customers can benefit.

And Mr HAMBWEZYA said so far miller’s have paid for 75,000 metric tonnes and has since called them to collect the maize from the nearest FRA depots.

He further said the agency has so far sold maize to 33 districts under the rural vulnerable communities to ensure household food security.

Mr HAMBWEZYA said as at the end of January 2023 the agency sold a total of 1,290 metric tonnes.

Mr HAMBWEZYA said the agency has also authorized the release of 50,000 metric tonnes of maize to Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU – for relief purposes for households affected by floods .

He has also emphasized that the country is food secure and there is no need for panic as the country seeks to stabilise the price of the commodity on the market .
