THERE was drama at the Choma Magistrate’s Court as gunshots were fired when an accused person took to his heels while being escorted to the court cells after his trial.
Byta FM Zambia Court Beat Journalist Womba Kasela reports that at the close of the trial, 28-year-old Kennedy Munsanje ran away when he was being escorted to the court cells by a female police officer who alerted other officers and chased after him on foot.
He was, however, shortly afterwards apprehended and later taken to appear before the court on new charges after being warned and cautioned by woman Constable Constance Siachitema.
Munsanje (in socks only) pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody but told the court that he heard someone calling him, which made him not to stop despite police officers firing gunshots.
Before receiving judgment, Munsanje asked to be taken to the hospital because his heart was ‘beating’ fast.
Principal Resident Magistrate Nthandose Chabala found Munsanje guilty and sentenced him to three months imprisonment.
Munsanje was appearing before the court for stock theft charges, where he is alleged to have stolen three cows valued at K12 000.This is contained in a report published by Byta FM.
