HOME affairs minister Jack Mwiimbu has warned that the people perpetrating the k!llings and other crimes live among citizens.
Of late, there has been a rise in the crime rate with the latest one, among many others being that of a 10-year-old boy who was found dead in Lusaka’s Emmasdale.
The issues regarding the matter in question were brought to parliament yesterday by Kabwata UPND member of parliament Andrew Tayengwa and Shiwang’andu PF lawmaker Stephen Kampyongo.
In his matter of urgent public importance, Tayengwa lamented that parents now fear for their children’s lives.
“Madam Speaker, if you check the news of yesterday and today, we have been greeted with disturbing news. I will speak especially for my constituency where we have heard that three children from different schools have been abducted by these bl00d-thirsty m0nsters who are in the habit of even going to the extent of k!lling children,” said Tayengwa. “Madam Speaker, the parents out there, including myself, even some of these honourable members of parliament who have children who are going to school are actually worried and they do not even know whether they should allow their children to go to school because of the activities that have been happening especially in the past two days. Madam Speaker, is the honourable Minister of Home Affairs in order just to keep quiet without saying anything to that effect especially that not only your children, Madam Speaker or your grandchildren but the children of many citizens are actually worried? I seek your serious indulgence Madam Speaker.”
And Kampyongo disclosed that parents on the Copperbelt were planning to protest because of attacks that are similar to what the Tayengwa highlighted.
In response, Mwiimbu called on members of the public to identify those that look suspicious in communities.
“I would like to assure the nation that the Zambia Police Service, in conjunction with other security wings of government are on the ground investigating these matters. You may have noted that two kids were k!lled in the last one month. The perpetrators of all those heinous acts have been arrested,” he said. “I also wish to appeal to members of the public including the member of parliament for Kabwata to work with the community. The perpetrators of these acts are within the community. Let us identify anyone who is suspicious and whom we think is involved in such activities. Let them be reported to security wings.”
