Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) on the 15th August,2023 successfully evacuated conjoined twins and it’s mother from Serenje District,Central province.
The twin girls were delivered to a 19 year old mother through cesarean section at serenje District Hospital by surgeons led by Dr. Mulumba Lwabeya.
ZFDS carried out the emergency aeromedical evacuation following a request from the referral hospital to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to have the case attended to at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) children’s hospital in Lusaka.
The air ambulance arrived at Lusaka’s ZAF airport and Paramedics from UTH carried out the land transport to the hospital.
ZFDS emergency lead Doctor Mirriam Nawale confirmed that the condition of the twins and the mother is stable.
According to records from the referral hospital,the twins have congenital abnormalities.
The twins share one ambulilical cord and have two distinct heart beats attached from sternum body.
In another development ,the Service has also evacuated an 11 year old female patient from Arthur Davison Children Hospital (ADH) in Ndola with a foreign body in her airway to Lusaka.
The child was admitted to the hospital five days ago after swallowing a foreign object from a pen.
She is also admitted at the UTH children’s hospital.
