A 24-year-old fisherman of Siavonga’s Munyama is suspected to have drowned in Lake Kariba after his colleagues fell asleep, leaving him to solely operate the rig vessel they were on.

Munyama ward councillor Special Mulaziki confirmed the incident in an interview.

He identified the victim as Shepherd Moobe.

Mr Mulaziki said Mr Moobe, who was in the company of three other fishermen, was moving on a rig vessel from Siavonga to Hamatuba when he met his fate.

Mr Mulaziki said the three fishermen could not find Mr Moobe, hence they reported to police that he possibly drowned.

He said this happened on Wednesday last week between 07:00 hours and 08:00 hours.

A search for the body is under way.
Mr Mulaziki said the other fishermen could not have heard their colleague scream or shout for help because engines used on rigs are noisy.
