A total of 50 women in Chipata have been empowered with sewing machines and starter pack materials valued over 250,000 Kwacha.

The 50 widows and vulnerable women have been empowered by a non-governmental organization Direct-Aid Zambia in partnership with Chipata Mayor George Mwanza.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Chipata this morning, Direct-Aid Zambia Country Coordinator Muhammad Yusuf says his organization will continue supplementing government efforts in achieving a country free from illiteracy, poverty and hunger.

Meanwhile, Chipata Mayor George Mwanza has commended Direct-Aid Zambia for implementing a number of programs in communities such as the provision of safe drinking water among other things.

Mr. Mwanza has asked beneficiaries not to sell the machines but use them to kick out poverty in their families.

And one of the beneficiaries Grace Zulu, a visually impaired and has been surviving on the streets says the empowerment will positively change her life.
