A 45-year-old male resident of Chingola District on the Copperbelt, identified as Kondwani Phiri, has died after being hit by a train.
The incident reported by the train driver occurred on May 29th 2024, around 14:30 hours near the United Church OF Zambia Chiwempala congregation.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba tells Mafken News that the accident happened while Phiri was walking along the railway line with headsets on.
Brief Facts of the matter are that, the locomotive driver had departed from Chingola railway station at approximately 14:00 hours, heading towards Kitwe. As he approached the Chingola Luano section near the Church, he spotted Phiri walking on the tracks.
The driver attempted to alert Phiri by sounding the train’s horn, but Phiri, unable to hear due to his headsets, did not respond. Despite applying emergency brakes, the driver could not stop the train in time, and Phiri was sadly hit. He was immediately rushed to Chawama Mini Hospital.
Mr. Mweemba has revealed that Phiri sustained severe injuries, including a fractured left arm, a fractured right leg, a deep cut on the forehead, and abdominal bruises and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Copperbelt Police Chief has further disclosed that officers visited the scene and confirmed the details of the incident.
The body was then taken to Nchanga North General Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem and burial.
