A 33-year-old man standing at a layby near Chingwere junction lost his right leg after a Mitsubishi Fuso truck collided with a Toyota Coaster bus at the same location around 08:30 hours today.
The victim, Bowas Banda, was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving medical attention.
The bus was driven by Charles Zgalunga, 42, from 9 Miles area in Chibombo District. It had 23 passengers on board. The Fuso truck was driven by Ackson Malekano, 34, from Lusaka’s Ngombe compound, and had three passengers.
Eleven passengers from the bus sustained slight injuries and were treated at Matero Level One Hospital before being discharged. The driver and 12 other passengers were unharmed. The truck driver and his passengers also escaped without injuries.
The accident occurred when the truck driver allegedly misjudged the clearance distance, causing the truck to collide with the bus. Both vehicles were heading towards Lusaka town.
The truck suffered a shattered front screen, damaged bumper, and side mirrors, while the bus was extensively damaged.
Police officers are currently investigating the incident.
