A 33-year-old man from Ntembo village in Nakonde district of Muchinga province has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor for unlawfully wounding his 25-year-old wife, Happiness Nanyinza.
Davies Mwamulima, who married Happiness in October last year, just a few months after divorcing his first wife whom he had married a decade ago and had two children with, was arrested on December 23rd after she reported him to the police for beating her up.
During the trial, the convict denied the charge, claiming he only slapped his wife as any man would do to a “wronging wife”.
However, he acknowledged not knowing his actions could escalate into something serious.
The state presented several witnesses, including Mwamulima’s mother, who testified that her son beat his wife after finding her with another man in their toilet.
Nakonde Magistrate Faith Mkandawire found Mwamulima guilty on Thursday and sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor, effective from December 23rd.
