Citizens First (CF) President Harry Kalaba has condemned the jailing of Kitwe-based Pastor Dancun Simuchimba, calling it an attack on free speech and justice.
Pastor Simuchimba was sentenced to nine months in prison after criticizing the government’s demolition of stalls belonging to self-employed Zambians. Kalaba argues that punishing a religious leader for speaking against economic hardship is unjust, especially in a Christian nation.
“My heart bleeds that Pastor Simuchimba is behind bars for standing up for struggling citizens—people whom President Hichilema cannot employ full-time,” Kalaba said in a statement.
He further urged President Hichilema to release the pastor unconditionally and instead take action against those responsible for destroying livelihoods.
“Mr. President, preserve families and don’t be an intolerant leader who silences opposing views. If you know what is good for you in the elections next year, do the right thing,” Kalaba warned.
His remarks come just days after a United Nations human rights representative visited Zambia, raising concerns over the government’s commitment to fundamental freedoms.
