Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, on 13th February 2025, handed over a new skip truck and three bins to Serenje Town Council at the Civic Centre, marking a significant improvement in the district’s waste management capabilities.
The K2,484,000 procurement, funded through the 2024 Constituency Development Fund (CDF), represents a collaborative effort between Serenje Central and Muchinga constituencies. The project was successfully executed by Likaz Enterprises Limited within four months.
During the handover ceremony, Dr Mwanakampwe emphasized the project’s multiple benefits: “This investment will not only address our garbage collection challenges but also create revenue generation opportunities through paid collection services. Most importantly, it will help maintain cleaner and healthier environments in our markets and communities.”
In his welcoming remarks, Council Chairperson Staivous Mulumba highlighted the critical timing of this acquisition.
“Our district has been facing serious waste management challenges due to the frequent breakdown of our existing tractor and increased garbage generation in markets and communities,” said Mulumba. “This investment will revolutionize our waste management system.”
The new equipment will particularly benefit areas that have faced persistent challenges, including Ibolelo Ward and the Central Business District, with plans to extend services to previously underserved areas like Ndabala and Kanona.
District Commissioner Mr Paul Masuwa expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for the increased CDF allocation, which has enabled such crucial developments.
“This investment demonstrates our President’s commitment to improving service delivery at the local level,” said Masuwa.
The procurement is expected to:
- Resolve long-standing garbage collection challenges.
- Increase efficiency in district-wide waste management.
- Generate revenue through paid garbage collection services, and
- Expand coverage to previously underserved areas.
The Council has called for community cooperation in proper waste disposal practices and adherence to collection schedules to maximize the impact of this new investment.@M.G
