Two people have died after being run over by a motor vehicle in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred yesterday around 19:00 hours near Chankhanga Primary School along the Great East Road in Chipata District.

An unidentified motorcycle rider and an unidentified cyclist were killed on the spot, while the driver of the motor vehicle Mitsubishi Canter, Zefenia Kamanga, aged 55 from Munga Compound in Chipata, who was carrying two passengers, escaped unharmed.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, told Breeze FM News that the accident occurred when the motorcycle rider attempted to overtake the motor vehicle on the left side.

In the process, the rider collided with the cyclist, who was ahead of them. Both fell onto the road, where they were run over by the motor vehicle.

Mr. Mweemba confirmed that both the rider and the cyclist sustained fatal head injuries and died at the scene.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Chipata Central Hospital Mortuary, where they await post-mortem examination and identification.
