A Nutritionist and Public Health Expert residing in Lusaka, Sylvia Mwelwa, has voiced serious concerns about the increasing prevalence of nutritional problems, particularly obesity, in developing nations like Zambia.

Speaking to Byta FM News recently, Mwelwa emphasized that obesity develops when the number of calories consumed through food and beverages surpasses the number of calories burned through exercise and daily activities.

She stressed that obesity can affect individuals of any age, including young children.

She further explained that the aging process, accompanied by hormonal shifts and a decrease in physical activity, contributes to an increased risk of obesity.

Mwelwa also highlighted pregnancy as a contributing factor, noting that some women experience difficulty in losing weight gained during pregnancy, which can lead to long-term obesity.

In Choma, District Health Promotions Officer Edgar Mulenga echoed Mwelwa’s concerns, confirming that the prevalence of obesity among adults in the region has reached alarming levels.

Mulenga underscored the critical importance of maintaining a healthy weight and preventing obesity to drastically reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers.

He stressed that effective prevention of obesity and the reduction of NCD risk requires regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and significant lifestyle modifications.

Mulenga urged increased community education and awareness campaigns to promote these vital lifestyle changes.
