Authorities in Petauke have confiscated 21 trays of expired eggs from a vendor at Petauke Main Market after receiving a complaint from a concerned resident.
The Petauke Town Council’s Public Health team swiftly investigated the matter and found that the eggs were unfit for human consumption. The vendor has since been penalized for violating food safety regulations.
According to a statement issued by Petauke Town Council’s Public Relations Officer, Corinne Mwanza, the seizure was conducted under the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Cap 295.
“The Local Authority has a mandate to ensure that all food items sold in the market are safe for consumption. Trading in expired or rotten food poses a serious health risk, and we will not hesitate to take action against those who disregard public health laws,” said Mwanza
The confiscated eggs, estimated to be worth K1,890, have since been disposed of.
The Council has warned traders against selling expired food items, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against offenders.
“We urge all food vendors and traders to ensure that their products are safe and properly stored. Consumers are also encouraged to check expiry dates before purchasing any food items,” Mwanza added.
The Council further appealed to residents to report any suspicious food items being sold in the market, stressing that public cooperation is crucial in maintaining food safety standards.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict adherence to food safety laws, as authorities continue working to protect public health in Petauke.
