Ten employees of Kawambwa Sugar have drowned, while six others have survived after the boat they were in capsized in Lwena River in Luapula Province.

The incident happened when 16 employees of the Kawambwa Sugar Company were crossing the river to get to work, using a community banana boat.

In a statement, Luapula Province Police Commanding officer MWALA YUYI said the incident happened at about 07:00 hours today.

Mr. YUYI explained that as the men were on their way, the coxswain, who was paddling the boat, informed them that the paddle had broken, and the boat lost direction.

He said the boat was carried by the current hit a rock, and capsised.
