LIions have killed 10 head of cattle in Serenje District in Central Province.

The lions, believed to have escaped from South Luangwa National Park, have been terrorising communities, who are now living in fear.

Serenje Town Council chairperson Staivous Mulumba and District Commissioner Paul Masuwa confirmed the development in separate interviews.

Mr Mulumba said the lions were spotted on June 4, 2025 and have been terrorising people in Nambo, Mbaswa, Chisangwa, Chiei and Muchinda wards.

“Yes, it is true that lions have been spotted in the district and are moving up and down terrorising communities. I am happy that ZAWA has moved in and they are on the ground; so far, they have killed one lion,” he said.

Mr Masuwa said about five lions are believed to have been spotted by members of the public in the district.

He has advised people in the district to desist from moving at awkward hours in order to protect themselves.

Mr Masuwa said people are being sensitised to help safeguard their lives.

“People should avoid moving at awkward hours and see to it that they are indoors,” Mr Masuwa said.
