A Tanzanian truck driver working for ANAMOL Transport Company in Dar es Salaam has died after allegedly taking his own lífe by ingèsting an unknown substance moments after being caught siphoning dièsel from his employer’s truck in Nakonde District, Muchinga Province.

According to Muchinga Police Commanding Officer Denis Moola, the incident occurred when the company’s supervisor, Joseph Steven, tracked the truck’s GPS signals to Macrich Truck Park in Wulongo village after it mysteriously failed to proceed with its delivery to Lubumbashi, DRC.

Upon arrival, he reportedly caught the driver, identified as Khalfani Salaam, stèaling fúel from the main and reserve tanks of the truck.

An audit revealed that 1,450 litres of dièsel worth K36,772 was missing.

As Salaam was being escorted to the police station, he pulled out a bottle of an unknown substance from his bag and consúmed it, collapsing immediately.

He was rushed to Nakonde District Hospital, where he was admitted but later dièd at 05:00 hours on June 19.

Police found Salaam with whitish fòam oòzing from his mouth, and the a bottle was recovered from his belongings.

His body was later handed over to Tanzanian authorities after being deposited in the hospital mortuary.
