Chikanta Ward Councilor in Kalomo, Aston Malasha, has raised concern over the increased levels of deforestation in the area due to charcoal production.
He tells Byta FM News in an interview that indiscriminate cutting down of trees has become common owing to the high demand for charcoal on the market.
Malasha has called on state and non-state actors to come up with a holistic approach towards mitigating charcoal production, fearing that if left unchecked, climate change will continue affecting communities.
Meanwhile, Chief Chikanta of the Tonga-speaking people in Kalomo has emphasized the need to conduct massive and continuous tree planting initiatives to replenish the environment.
