A 63-year-old woman who survived an elephant attack in Chama District has died at Chama District Hospital.

Chama District Health Director Billiaty Phiri says Grace Kaluba died yesterday around 18:20 hours, with blood loss from internal bleeding being one of the contributing factors to her death.

Dr. Phiri says Ms. Kaluba experienced bleeding in the left eye, bilateral lower limb pain, rib fractures, and fractures to the left tibia and fibula.

Ms. Kaluba was being treated at Chama District Hospital and was about to be referred to Chinsali General Hospital when she died.

The victim, Grace Kaluba, was attacked by an elephant while returning from collecting grass in the bush with three other women on July 3, 2025, around 10:00 hours.

She initially survived the attack and was rescued and taken to Tembwe Rural Health Center, where she received treatment before being referred to Chama District Hospital.
