CzechAid, together with local partners and the Czech Embassy, has launched a climate-smart farming project in Southern Provinceoffering practical help to one of the areas hit hardest by climate change.

Community members, private sector representatives, and government officials gathered in Choma for the official launch of a new Czech-funded agricultural initiative. The project, implemented by People in Need Zambia (PIN) in partnership with Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), Musika Zambia, and Impuls Africa, comes at a time when rural Zambia is facing one of the most severe climate challenges in decades.

In his opening address, the Permanent Secretary of Southern Province, Dr. Namani Monze, welcomed the Czech involvement with sincerity: “The past two seasons have shown us the devastating impact of drought on our communities. Many of our fields have dried up, and we have seen entire livelihoods threatened. This project aligns with our government’s strategy, Vision 2030, and the National Adaptation Plan. Climate-smart agriculture is no longer optional  it is a necessity. And CzechAid has shown up when we needed it most.”

The project combines modern agricultural techniques with traditional knowledge. Demonstration farms, training sessions, and direct support to more than 500 farmers are among its core activities.

For many in Choma, this partnership represents not just an aid project, but a political and moral stance, a shift towards resilience, sovereignty, and sustainability. In the words of a representative of His Royal Highness, Chief Cooma, Jonsen Habachimba: “Everything that was said today resonates deeply with our community’s own five-year development plan. This initiative was not imposed  it was built with us, not for us. That is why we welcome it.”

The Czechia’s support to Zambia is not new. For decades Czech experts have contributed to local development, particularly in agriculture and education. However, this moment marks a renewed and strategic effort. As highlighted by the representative of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lusaka, Streva Chibesa: We believe in walking this journey together – not leading from the front but learning side by side. Let’s continue walking together to build a climate-smart, inclusive, and sustainable future for Zambia.”

In recent years, Southern Province has been severely hit by drought, jeopardizing food security across the region. But the Choma launch was not about despair – it was about determination. “Today we gather not just to launch a project, but to respond. To protect our people. To act. The Czech Republic has joined hands with us to create local solutions for local problems. This is what solidarity looks like,” concluded the Permanent Secretary.
