A 30-Year-Old Man in Chama District of Eastern Province has survived a severe hippo attack after a béast dragged him out of a moving canoe while fishing in the Luangwa River.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred yesterday, 10th August 2025, around 04:00 hours in Masiku village, Chief Chifunda.

Brief facts of the matter are that, the victim was in the company of his elder brother, Mpeleka Moyo, and his brother-in-law, Simon Nyirenda, had gone fishing in the Luangwa River.

While at the river, the victim, who was alone in a canoe, was attacked by a hippo, causing the vessel to capsize in the process.

The hippo caused severe injuries to the victim, who sustained a deep cut on the abdomen, which made the intestińes protrude.

Mr Mweemba says the victim shouted for help, which attracted the attention of two men, identified as Lungu Lungu and Patu Lungu, who then managed to rescue him.

He says the victim was immediately rushed to Chifunda Rural Health Post and later referred to Lundazi District Hospital for further medical attention.

Mr Mweemba says the victim is admitted to Lundazi District Hospital, where he is responding well to treatment.
