A 45-year-old woman in Chief Magodi, Chasefu District of Eastern Province has taken her own life by ingésting quíck fórce tablets in the presence of her husband after being accused of béwitching her co-wife.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said Getrude Nyirenda took her own lífe on August 11, 2025, around 05:00 hours in Muzelemeka village.
Brief facts are that, Lengani Msimuko aged 47 had two wives, Anna Tembo, 40, the first wife, and Getrude Nyirenda, the deceased, who was the second wife.
In 2024, the first wife developed severe stómach pains and consulted a pastor, who told her she was bewitched by her co-wife, now the deceased.
The first wife informed her husband, who then told his second wife to stop bewitching her.
Recently, in August 2025, Anna Tembo experienced the same problem and consulted another prophet, who again accused the second wife of wítchcraft.
Mr. Mweemba says the husband confronted his second wife about the accusations on August 11, 2025.
He says this did not sit well with the second wife who later ingested quick force tablets, which they had purchased for preserving maize.
She was rushed to Kanyanga Mission Health Center, where she died around 17:00 hours while receiving treatment.
The body has been deposited in the Chasefu Mini hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.
