A 27-year-old motorcyclist has died on the spot after being hit by a Hino truck in Chasefu District of Eastern Province.

The deceased has been identified as Lightwell Chabinga, 27, of Chief Kambombo in Chama District, who was riding a Kinglion motorbike with a passenger on board, identified as Esai Chabinga, aged 18.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, 20 August 2025, around 07:30 hours in Kanjepu village, Chief Magodi, along the Chama-Lundazi gravel road, 48 kilometres north of Chasefu boma.

The accident happened when the driver of the Hino truck lost control of the motor vehicle due to excessive speed and, in the process, hit the rider who was coming from the opposite direction.

The body has been deposited into Chasefu Mini Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination results.

Meanwhile, Esai Chabinga is said to have sustained internal injuries, a painful left shoulder, and a cut on the right leg and is admitted to Chasefu Mini Hospital.

Mr Mweemba says John Mseteka, aged 22, who was driving the Hino truck from a north to south direction, escaped unhurt.
