On the morning of August 20, a fierce fire reduced Flat No. 7 at Twibukishe Flats, adjacent to Kitwe Trades, to ashes. Smoke and flame engulfed the unit owned by local resident Esther Mulenga, 22. Preliminary reports point to a suspected electrical short circuit. Among destroyed belongings were a refrigerator, a bed, a stove, various clothing items, a television, beddings, and vital school supplies geared toward the new term.
Miraculously, the occupant and neighbouring tenants escaped unharmed. Quick action by the joint fire response teams from Kitwe, Mopani and Kalulushi, assisted by officers from Kitwe Central Police, confined the fire before it could spread. Firefighters worked for more than an hour to thoroughly extinguish the flames.
In a subsequent briefing, safety officials reiterated the vital importance of regular inspection and careful use of electrical devices in the home to prevent the recurrence of such devastating incidents.
