A 62-year-old man in Chipangali District of Eastern Province has been found drowned in a pit at Mkanda market after days of being missing, with a bottle of Kachasu discovered in his pocket.
The incident occurred between August 16, 2025, at 10:00 hours and August 21, 2025, at 12:45 hours in Kamungu Village.
According to Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, the deceased, identified as Charles Wood, was left home by his mother, Anifa Macha, who had gone to attend a burial on August 16, 2025, around 10:00 hours.
Mr Mweemba says when she returned home, she could not find him, hoping he would come back, but several days passed without his return.
He says this prompted his younger brother to report him missing.
Mr Mweemba says while reporting, he received a phone call from a community member named Tabitha, informing him of a body found in a pit of about 3 meters filled with dirty water at Mkanda Market.
He says police officers and the younger brother rushed to the scene, where relatives identified the body as Charles Wood’s.
He says no visible injuries were found, but a bottle of Kachasu, an illicit beer, was discovered in the deceased’s pocket.
Mr Mweemba says both the police and family members do not suspect foul play.
He says due to the advanced state of decomposition, the family was advised to proceed with burial and mark the grave for possible exhumation.
