The Zambia Police have confirmed that the mother of the day-old baby who was dumped in a pit latrine in Livingstone’s Ngwenya Compound is a 15-year-old girl.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka says on the day of the incident, the girl’s aunt noticed that she was not in the house and had left the door open.
He says concerned about her absence, the aunt inquired from neighbors and discovered blood stains leading to a nearby toilet.
Mr. Daka explains that while the family was still trying to establish what had happened, the girl returned home and was questioned by her aunt.
The South Police Chief adds that around the same time, the owner of the yard, Gilder Kafulo, went to use the toilet and was shocked to hear a baby crying from inside the pit latrine.
He says Mr. Kafulo immediately raised an alarm, and with the help of another resident, managed to retrieve the baby boy alive.
Mr. Daka states that the juvenile later admitted to dumping the infant in the toilet adding that both the mother and child were rushed to Namatama Clinic before being referred to Livingstone Central Hospital for further treatment.
He further adds that medical staff confirmed that the baby, weighing 2.6 kilograms, is in stable condition despite sustaining minor bruises from exposure in the latrine.
Meanwhile, the 15-year-old mother is admitted to Livingstone Central Hospital under police guard as investigations continue.
