A 49-year-old woman in the Sinda District of Eastern Province has díed after allegedly consuming an unknown pòisonous substance due to dèbts.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on August 24, 2025, around 05:00 hours.

Mr Mweemba says on August 23, 2025, Zelipa Banda, now deceased, visited her aunt, Esther Banda, aged 45, in Chamabvu compound on August 23, 2025.

The Police Commissioner says that around 21:00 hours, they went to sleep, and today, around 05:00 hours, Esther Banda was awakened and informed by the children that her visiting niece was vomiting.

She was then rushed to Sinda Zonal Clinic, where she later died while receiving treatment.

Mr. Mweemba says police officers visited the scene and found that the body had no physical injuries, but a strong stench of the suspected pòisònous substance was detected, and fòam was seen coming from her mouth.

He says investigations reveal that the motive behind her taking her own íife was that she owed a lot of people money.

The body has been deposited into St Francis Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination results and burial.

He says both the police and relatives do not suspect any foul play.
