The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has intensified enforcement and public education campaigns nationwide to combat the illegal importation and sale of used undergarments and nightwear.

ZCSA Executive Director Gerald Chizinga stated that despite a clear prohibition, some individuals and firms continue to smuggle banned items such as used underwear into the country.

He issued a stern warning to importers and suppliers, emphasizing that they risk prosecution, seizure, and destruction of their goods under existing laws.

Recent inspections conducted between January and July 2025 revealed an 85% compliance rate. However, the Agency remains concerned about persistent offenders who continue to violate the regulations.

Over the past three years, more than 100 bales of used undergarments—valued at over 500,000 Kwacha—have been seized and destroyed in nationwide operations.

The Agency has also cautioned the public that wearing used clothing that comes into close contact with the skin may expose consumers to health risks, including skin rashes, fungal infections, and even sexually transmitted diseases.
