A 9-Year-old girl in Chief Mwase’s Chiefdom in Lundazi District of Eastern Province has been rescued from the jaws of a hyena and is nursing injuries after the attack.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident occurred yesterday, August 26, 2025, around 19:00 hours in Joseni Village, Nthitimila area.

Brief facts of the matter are that on August 26, 2025, around 19:00 hours, Keliness Phiri was sitting by the fireside with her mother, Juliet Nyirenda, aged 47, at their home when a hyena suddenly appeared, scratched her, and attacked her.

Mr. Mweemba says the mother, with the help of other community members, rescued the victim from the hyena.

He says the victim sustained injuries to her right ear and a bruise on the right side of the neck.

Mr. Mweemba says the victim is in stable condition and is currently receiving medical treatment at Lumezi Mission Hospital.

This incident follows another hyena attack that occurred on July 24, 2025, where a 2-year-and-5-month-old girl in the same chiefdom was attacked by a hyena in a similar way.
