Mwalala Rural Health Center in Chama District of Eastern Province has disclosed that it has not recorded any maternal deaths, both at the facility and in the community, for the past 12 years.
This came to light yesterday during the celebration of 12 Years of Zero Maternal Deaths held in Mwalala ward.
Mwalala Rural Health Center in-charge, John Lungu, said this has been achieved through various measures, such as sensitization on good health practices in the community through Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs), community volunteers.
Mr. Lungu says a trained workforce, which includes a nurse, a midwifery, and a clinical officer, among others, has greatly contributed to the facility recording zero maternal deaths.
He noted that the health center last recorded a maternal death in March 2013, and since then, maternal healthcare services in the area have been enhanced.
Mr. Lungu commended both the government and private partners for their commitment to making the health facility achieve zero maternal deaths through mentorship and material support.
He highlighted a drastic change in maternal health behavior, citing that people have stopped giving birth at home, a habit that earlier contributed to maternal deaths in the community.
Mr. Lungu called on other health facilities to ensure that both the life of the mother and the child are protected during birth.
Chama District Health Director, Billiaty Phiri, commended the health center and thanked the staff and the community for their collaborative efforts in achieving zero maternal deaths.
Dr. Phiri encouraged the community to always seek health services as soon as they feel unwell.
Ground Headman Katangalika thanked the facility for prioritizing maternal healthcare services and encouraged the facility to continue engaging the community on health matters.
The event featured various health services exhibitions.
