Police in Chasefu District have instituted investigations into a matter in which unknown persons set ablaze a grass-thatched bathroom and pit latrine worth K400 belonging to a 44-year-old man, in connection with a suspected land dispute.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba says the incident occurred yesterday, 30th August 2025, at around 23:00 hours in Kapela Village.
Mr. Mweemba says Saulos Nyirenda reported that some unknown persons set ablaze his grass-thatched pit latrine and bathroom.
Brief facts of the matter are that on 30th August 2025, around 23:00 hours, Mr. Nyirenda was asleep in his house when he suddenly heard a strange noise outside his house.
Mr. Mweemba says he immediately woke up and got out of the house, only to find his grass-thatched latrine and bathroom, located about 5 meters away from the house, burning.
He says Mr. Nyirenda saw strange people who were seen fleeing the scene.
The Police Commissioner says Mr. Nyirenda revealed that there has been a land dispute over the said land with other people, including a headman.
Mr. Nyirenda shouted for help, and by the time some community members were arriving, the bathroom and pit latrine had already been burnt.
He says police officers visited the scene and noted a completely burnt-down bathroom and a pit latrine whose roof had been gutted.
He says no arrest has been made, and a docket has been opened.
