Four people have died following a fatal road traffic accident near Milunga Village along the Mpika–Kasama Road late last night.

The accident involved a maize-laden Howo truck and trailer driven by 35-year-old Mr. Victor Kalimba, and a Canter light truck whose driver has not yet been identified.

According to preliminary investigations, the Howo truck, which was headed to Mpika from Kasama, is believed to have suffered a tyre burst. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane and collide head-on with the Canter truck that was traveling toward Kasama.

Mpika Town Council Fire Brigade officers, led by Firefighter Gideon Nyimbili, rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call. The rescue team found the Canter truck extensively damaged, with the driver trapped in the wreckage. Using hydraulic rescue equipment, they managed to extricate him, but he sustained fatal injuries.

All four occupants of the Canter, including the driver, were critically injured and rushed to Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

No serious injuries were reported from the Howo truck and trailer.

Mpika Town Council Divisional Fire Officer, Mr. Reuben Mukonde, has urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, particularly during night travel, in order to prevent such tragic accidents.
