The Kitwe City Council Fire Brigade and Rescue Services answered calls to three distinct fire emergencies across the city on Wednesday, September 3.
The earliest alert came at 10:29 hours from the Wusakile district, where smoke and flames were spotted at the ZESCO substation on Mindolo Road, close to Kalela Primary School. The crew deployed one hose and branch, sourcing water directly from the substation’s tank, and brought the fire under control within moments. The exact circumstances giving rise to the incident remain to be established. ZESCO staff, under the supervision of Mr. Chipungu, assisted and secured adjacent systems.
A second alarm was logged at 10:40 hours, directing firefighters to MCD Guest House on Frasier Way in Riverside. Here, the nine-room premises owned by Mr. Mwenya Davies, Plot No. 2, was compromised; six rooms, a grass-thatched bar, and adjacent property were heavily charred. Firefighters from Kitwe, Mopani, Kalulushi, and CEC crossed hoses to create a pneumatic curtain, pulling water from their on-board tanks to protect the remaining rooms. The investigation into the Riverside incident’s genesis continues.
The third response came in just about 14:29 on Lushitu Close in Parklands , when a grass and bush fire on Plot 7 put adjacent houses and some ZESCO poles at risk. Crews from the Kitwe Fire Brigade took the call , brought in a single hose-and-branch line hooked to the engine’s onboard tank and had the fire knocked down in short order.
