Northern Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Bernard Mpundu, has disclosed that Mpulungu districthas so far recorded 72 suspected cholera cases, of which 29 have been confirmed positive.

Mr.Mpundu said of the confirmed cases, 19 are Zambian nationals and 10 are from neighbouringTanzania. One death has been reported, a Tanzanian national.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the government is taking decisive action to contain theoutbreak.

“The government has intensified sensitization among citizens, and yesterday, the Ministry of Healthlaunched the cholera vaccine, which is being administered to everyone in the district,” he said.

Mr. Mpundu also clarified that there have been no confirmed cases of cholera in Mbala district, asall suspected cases were determined to be typhoid.

The Permanent Secretary made these remarks when Special Assistant to the President for Politics Mr. Levy Ngoma, paid a courtesy call on Mpulungu District Commissioner.

And Mr. Ngoma underscored the government’s commitment to public health.

“Government does not desire to see people die of cholera. We are working to ensure all necessary measures are in place to save lives,” Mr. Ngoma said.

Later, Mr. Ngoma met with His Royal Highness Senior Chief Tafuna, where he conveyed President Hakainde Hichilema’s desire to continue working closely with traditional leaders. He emphasized that the President seeks to promote unity and dialogue, urging leaders to resolve successiondisputes without resorting to court action.

Mr. Ngoma also cautioned contractors against slow progress in the construction of chiefs’ palaces.

In response, His Royal Highness Senior Chief Tafuna thanked the President for his leadership and for the peace that continues to prevail in the country.
