The Government of Zambia has commenced the installation of solar-powered fences in human-animal conflict hotspots within Chama District, aiming to protect crops and safeguard livelihoods from wildlife intrusion.

Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri acknowledged the challenges faced by communities due to frequent wildlife encroachment. He emphasized that Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources can be utilized to support fencing initiatives in areas vulnerable to such conflicts.

Mr. Phiri made these remarks during a courtesy call on Chief Chikwa of Chama District.

In response, Chief Chikwa expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, noting its importance in protecting local communities. He also commended the ongoing water and electrification projects in his chiefdom, which he said are improving the quality of life for his people.

Meanwhile, Chama District Commissioner Yobe Goma revealed that the Mapamba area in Chama South Constituency has already benefited from the solar fencing project, marking a positive step toward mitigating human-wildlife conflict.
