A fire has has gutted a barbershop owned by Rodwell Phiri and a clothes shop owned by Catherine Namakube near Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) main gate.

The incident happened In the early hours of the morning, around 01:56.

According to an eyewitness, Josephine Lukele, a security officer at UTH, the blaze started in the barbershop, possibly due to an electrical fault, before spreading to the neighboring clothes store.

The fire destroyed 4 barbing machines, a home theatre, and a mirror in the barbershop, with losses estimated at K14,000. And At Catherine Namakube’s clothes shop, a bale of female coats and skirts worth K10,000 was lost.

Josephine Lukele says the fire brigade managed to put out the flames, but by then, property damage had already occurred.

Authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of the fire.
