A devastating incident shook Nyakuluma Village in Chief Mwanjawanthu’s Chiefdom of Petauke District when a 14-year-old boy allegedly took his own lífe by hangíng himself on a mango tree.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on 21 September 2025 between 10:30 hours and 11:00 hours.
Osina Mwanza’s day began when he accompanied his mother, Mary Tembo aged 32, and his 5-year-old sister, Charity Lungu, to their garden to water crops around 08:00 hours.
During their time in the garden, Osina gave his younger sister a 50 Ngwee coin for safekeeping.
The sequence of events that led to the tragedy unfolded when Osina asked for the coin back around 10:30 hours, only to discover that his sister had lost it.
Angered by this, he began beating his younger sister. Their mother intervened, stopping Osina Mwanza and attempting to calm him down by promising to give him K5 as compensation once they returned home.
Despite his mother’s assurance, Osina Mwanza left the garden in a state of anger. He did not return home, prompting the mother to search for him.
Tragically, she found him hanging from a mango tree about 100 meters from their garden between 10:30 hours and 11:00 hours.
Police visited the scene and found no signs of suspected foul play and advised relatives to proceed with burial arrangements.
