A 30-year-old woman from Kazimbwe village in Chief Chikwa’s Chiefdom in Chama District of the Eastern Province has narrowly escaped death when the earth wall of a hand-dug well collapsed on her as she was attempting to fetch water.

Vilimukulu Ward Councilor Robert Kumwenda confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Esther Zimba.

Mr. Kumwenda says the incident happened yesterday around 17:00 hours as Esther and her two children, aged 10 and 14 years, had gone to fetch water along the Chigoma-Kanga road in Kapotwe village.

He says the victim was trapped as she was fetching water from the said hand-dug well.

Mr. Kumwenda says the two children quickly rushed to the village and informed people, who came to her rescue.

He says the victim was quickly rushed to the Chigoma health post.

Mr. Kumwenda says when he visited her, she complained of chest pains.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kumwenda says efforts have been made to drill a borehole in the area, but it has been difficult to find suitable water points where a borehole can be drilled.

He says efforts are being made to ensure that people in the area have safe water point, as the search for a suitable site for a borehole continues, aiming to provide residents with safer alternatives for accessing water.
