Zambian students interested in pursuing studies in Czechia are encouraged to apply for fully funded Master’s and PhD scholarships. Applications remain open until September 30, 2025.
The Czech government has designed scholarships which include the coverage of living expenses and tuition fees. This has made it possible for students from Zambia and a number of other partner countries to enjoy subsidized tuition of world class education. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young Zambians who have dreams but are financially constrained.
Cementing An Existing Relationship
Zambia and Czechia have worked collaboratively on developmental projects in the area such as forestry, energy and community development. For Zambian students attending Czechia, the introduction of government scholarships from Czechia has been a game changer, especially since 2020 when education became a focus of the wider cooperation.
Each year, 25 to 30 Zambian students are awarded scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in fields that align with Zambia’s development priorities. Zambian development priorities are the motivators for post graduate studies in these demanding areas. A number of the available programs are in the domain of technical vocational education and training (TVET) in fields like agriculture, ICT, food safety, and engineering. These are important in regards to the development of the economy of Zambia and the Vision 2030 agenda.
In a recent discussion, Czech Republic’s Cooperation Head, Mr Milan Kalcu, commented on the importance of the scholarships. “By investing in Zambian students, we are contributing to Zambia’s growth in agriculture, engineering, ICT, and governance. At the same time, Czech universities learn from Zambian expertise, especially in areas like forestry and community development. It’s a partnership of shared knowledge,” he said.
Changing Lives: A Zambian Student’s Story
For Yaliwe Nkhoma, a 25-year-old Master’s student in Agri-Food Systems and Rural Development, the Czech scholarship has been a dream come true. She shared her journey last year and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
“The application process was clear and transparent, and the embassy guided us every step of the way,” she recalls. “Once in Czechia, I found the people very supportive, and the education system is excellent. I am grateful every day for this chance.”
Yaliwe says the experience has gone beyond academics: “I’ve met students from all over the world, and we learn so much from each other. The courses being offered in English made the transition much easier. For me, this opportunity has shown that nothing is impossible.”
She hopes to return home with the skills to strengthen Zambia’s rural development. “The agri-food sector is crucial for our communities. I want to use what I’ve learned here to help Zambians in rural areas improve their livelihoods.”
Importance for Zambia The scholarships are being offered at a time when Zambia is aggressively trying to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on copper. By providing young people with advanced skills in agriculture, ICT, and engineering, Czechia’s support is contributing to the long-term growth of Zambia.
The programme also promotes international collaboration on research which enables Zambian graduates to develop contacts that may benefit Zambia for years to come.
An Encouragement to Apply
With the deadline fast approaching Zambian students who aspire to study abroad should grab the opportunity.
“If someone asked me whether to apply, I would say, ‘Don’t even hesitate,’” Yaliwe says. “It’s a good deal, and it can change your life.”
Applications close on 30 September 2025. For Zambian students dreaming of postgraduate studies in Europe, this could be the moment to take a bold step toward that future.
