Over 50 residents of Kalusale and Chambishi areas in Kalulushi District have sued Sino Metals and NFC Africa Mining Plc in the Lusaka High Court, demanding to be fully compensated for the harm caused by the companies’ pollution.
The residents are seeking compensation, both in equity and in monetary terms, for the immediate, ongoing, short-term and long-term harm occasioned by the pollution.
They are also seeking an order for the companies to immediately cease all earthmoving activities in the affected area until an independently developed environmental remediation plan is implemented, following public consultation.
Furthermore, they want a declaration that the two companies violated the provisions of the Water Resources Management Act No. 21 of 2011.
