I have spent most of my life as a voice for the people. I saw Kaunda and his team dedicate themselves to the nation with true patriotism. But after Kaunda, that spirit faded, replaced by partisanship driven by fínancial and material gain.
Governments keep allocating resources to economic and sòcial sectors, but are these efforts guided by clear goals for national and personal development. Are there real growth targets. I doubt it, because no matter which government comes, the reality for the majority stays the same, poor living standards, while the only lives that improve are the obvious ones.
When citizens remain poor, their children inherit the same hardships, and the result is an underdeveloped country. The tragedy is that we have become a nation unconcerned about the future. Government actions unfold before us daily, yet we hardly react. We live only for today, leaving tomorrow to take care of itself.
So what is the answer to this plight. We do not need one messiah, we need many, and those messiahs are all of us. Only we can create the good life we deserve. It should not be the privilege of a few we elect to serve us. We must reclaim our responsibility as the true custodians of our destiny, for too often we surrender our power to those who do not deserve it.
Yes, there are selfless leaders among us, but they are overshadowed by the selfish. Still, we have a loving God on our side, a God who despises uncaring parents and leaders. Yet God will not act unless we take the lead. As I have always said, do your very best, and God will do the rest.
