A 24-year-old man in Mpika District of Muchinga Province has allegedly taken his own life by hanging after a dispute with his mother over a pot.
Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Dennis Moola confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred between September 20, 2025, around 10:00 hours, and September 28, 2025, around 07:00 hours.
Mr. Moola identified the deceased as Kelvin Malama of Nsambe Village in Chief Mukungule’s Chiedom.
Brief facts of the matter are that Kelvin had borrowed a pot from his mother, Maria Chibesa, aged 44, to cook nshima. However, when his mother asked for the pot back, Kelvin got upset and returned it with the nshima uneaten.
He then left home on September 20 around 10:00 hours after the argument.
For two days, Kelvin was not seen around, and his mother asked her relatives if they had seen or heard from him, but to no avail.
However, on September 28 around 07:00 hours, Kelvin was discovered hanging from a tree by Joshua Chibesa, who was on his way to the hammer mill in Chipowa Village.
Mr. Moola says Joshua informed Kelvin’s father, who then went with the Village Headman to confirm the incident. They found Kelvin’s body hanging from a tree in a decomposed state.
Police officers advised the relatives to bury the body and mark the grave for possible exhumation, as no foul play is suspected.
Mr. Moola says an inquiry has been opened.
