A 60-year-old man of Lusaka’s Garden House has filed for divorce at the Matero Local Court, claiming that his wife and stepchildren do not respect him.

Jimmy Mutale, a truck driver, is seeking to end his 18-year marriage to Sophia Phiri.

Mr. Mutale has told Senior Local Court Magistrate Lewis Mumba that after their marriage, the couple moved into Ms. Phiri’s incomplete house, which he also helped to finish.

However, he says after losing his job, his wife began calling him “useless” and at one point ordered him to leave the house.

He has added that he was no longer interested in the marriage, preferring to remain unmarried and enjoy peace of mind.

But Ms. Phiri, 54, a businesswoman has told the court that she does not want a divorce, arguing that Mr. Mutale had helped raise her children.

Magistrate Mumba has since granted the couple a two-month reconciliation period, urging Ms. Phiri to ensure her children respect their stepfather and advising Mr. Mutale to stop running away from home and face his problems.
