Zambia Police have made an arrest in connection with the violent abduction and assault of a 34-year-old man, Joe Nyondo, during a burial ceremony in Lusaka last week.

The incident took place on 25 September 2025, around 13:00 hours at the Old Leopards Hill Cemetery.

Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi disclosed in a statement availed to Byta FM that Nyondo, a resident of Lusaka, was allegedly seized and beaten by unidentified individuals.

Chilabi revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that while a burial was underway for a Kaunda Square resident, a grey Toyota Quantum van stormed the site.

He stated that the vehicle was carrying between 12 and 16 occupants, some of whom were armed with offensive weapons, and caused unrest among the mourners before forcibly abducting Nyondo.

He revealed that the police investigation quickly led to the arrest of the vehicle’s driver, Malaki Shadreck Ngeke, a 33-year-old resident of Matero, who was apprehended at Heroes Stadium, the location where the victim had been taken.

Nyondo sustained injuries in the attack and was issued a medical report at Mandevu Police Post before being taken to Chipata Level One Hospital for treatment.
