The Department of National Parks and Wildlife-DNPW in Ezekiya Village, Chief Chifunda’s Chiefdom in Chama District has kíllèd an elèphant after it went on a rampage, destroying property and threatening residents.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 3, 2025.

Mr. Mweemba says the elephant broke through an electric solar fence and entered Headman Ezekiya’s house, surrounded by mango trees, where it began eating mangoes.

He says community members spotted the elephant and alerted others to help chase it away.

However, the elephant proved difficult to control and charged at a woman who had sought refuge in a nearby grass-thatched house and proceeded to destroy the house, apparently intent on attacking the woman.

Wildlife officers from a nearby camp were quickly informed and rushed to the scene, attempting to scare the elephant away with gunshots and fireworks.

Unfortunately, the elephant became viòlent, charging towards the officers, which forced them to shòòt it.

Mr. Mweemba stated that, fortunately, no injuries were recorded among the residents or the wildlife officers.
