Chief Justice Hon. Dr. Mumba Malila SC has been presented with an award in recognition of his unwavering support and invaluable contribution to the growth and mission of the Southern and Eastern Africa Chief Justices’ Forum (SEACJF).

The award was presented on the sidelines of the SEACJF, which is currently underway in Botswana under the theme “Judicial Independence and Accountability in Safe guarding the Rule of Law.”

The award honours Chief Justice Dr. Malila’s dedicated efforts in advancing the work of the judiciary within the Southern and Eastern African region. The Chief Justice of Zambia, through the Judiciary of Zambia, currently hosts the Secretariat of the SEACJF, a position of great significance. Under the supervision of the Management Committee, of which Chief Justice Malila is a member, the Secretariat manages the Forum’s day-to-day affairs and oversees the implementation of its objectives on behalf of the sixteen-member Chief Justices.

The Chief justice is currently a member of the Management Commitee of SEACJF. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Zambia on 22nd December 2021. Prior to his appointment, he served as Supreme Court Judge since 2014. He has extensive National, Regional and International legal experience having worked in quasi-Judicial bodies such as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, Vice Chairperson and Commissioner on the African Union Commission on Human and People’s Rights and as a Member of the United Nations working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Additionally, he was once chairperson of the Zambia Human Rights Association, Council Member of the Law Association of Zambia, Honorary Secretary of the Law Association of Zambia, and an Executive Committee member of the SADC Lawyers’ Association.

Justice Malila is in Botswana accompanied by Hon. Mr Justice Charles Zulu, High Court Judge, Hon Lady Justice Gertrude Chawatama High Court Judge and Judicial Officers.

The conference brought together Chief Justices, Judges and legal experts from across the Southern and East African regions .
